What golf ball is best for you? This handy online app will tell you

When it comes to getting fit for the right equipment, most golfers understand that factors like driver loft, shaft flex, iron type and wedge bounce all play a big part in getting the most from their golf game. But what about the golf ball?

This is where Ballnamic comes in. Developed by Ping to better understand how various balls impact distance, flight, spin and even its performance from the rough, Ballnamic is an agnostic fitting tool that allows a golfer — for less than the price of a dozen premium golf balls ($39) — to find the right ball for their game.

The online app takes data points based on a golfer’s current handicap, most common playing conditions — including altitude — driver launch and spin, iron launch and spin and preferred trajectory and asks about the performance variables that are most important to them. From there, the fitting algorithm kicks into high gear, recommending five golf balls ranked by performance for the golfer to consider. It can even factor in price.

So how do they do it?

With the help of their in-house swing robot, PingMan, along with a quadrascopic launch monitor and 3D radar-based system, engineers capture every 0.01 second of the golf ball through flight to get accurate information on downrange accuracy, height and final landing angle. From there, the data gets fed into Ballnamic’s algorithm.

A sample, based on individual player data, of the results generated by Ballnamic.
A sample, based on individual player data, of the results generated by Ballnamic. PING

One of the most interesting things about the testing process — where Ping strives to eliminate as many variables as possible at its Proving Ground headquarters in Phoenix — is that data capture happens in the middle of the night or the early hours of the morning when conditions are most calm. This is possible because the radar-based launch monitor doesn’t need to actually see the ball to capture data.

As Ping’s VP of fitting and performance, Marty Jertson, explains, this type of accuracy is what makes Ballnamic so helpful to golfers.

“One of the most exciting advancements with Ballnamic is that, for the first time in the golf industry, we decouple and approximate a ball’s initial launch conditions with its aerodynamic performance. It’s counterintuitive, but we’ve seen low-launch, low-spin golf balls that fly high, and high-launch, high-spin balls that fly low,” Jertson says. “Ballnamic doesn’t factor in traditional ball selection criteria, such as construction and number of layers. Instead, it strictly focuses on tested performance characteristics, algorithmic equations and mathematical approximations.”

This might sound complicated, but Ping is all about simplifying the process. Ballnamic takes but a few minutes to calculate the end results. And, when it comes to results, don’t be surprised if the golf ball that ends up being the best match for you isn’t the one you’re currently using. With so many models on the market, it’s next to impossible to test each one. Let Ballnamic do the heavy lifting.

Buying golf balls? Make sure to understand golf-ball construction

Other than their color, most golf balls look the same. A peek inside, however, shows that they’re highly engineered pieces of gear aimed at delivering a certain set of performance characteristics. The more you know about their construction, the easier it’ll be to buy the right model for you.

Although golf balls appear to be fairly simple pieces of sports equipment from the outside, they are, in fact, hyper-engineered, aerodynamically tuned orbs of synthetic rubbers and polymers designed to fly at ballistic speeds while maintaining a controlled trajectory. Yes, that sounds like a mouthful, but, if you’ve ever had the chance to see how the layers of a golf ball are molded and assembled, it’s a sight to behold. And it will make you think twice before you abandon the search for the next golf ball you hit into the long grass.

Speaking of layers, think of them as the engine, transmission and tires that allow the golf ball to possess their performance properties. But everything still starts with the core. For most two-piece or value-based golf balls, the core is larger and softer to help reduce spin, increase distance and maintain a softer feel. They can also be designed to have a variable hardness from the center out to the perimeter — known as progressive firmness — to create more speed while still maintaining a softer feel. This construction technology is used in all categories.

Next up is the mantle, a layer found in multilayer models. It aids the core in transferring energy for ball speed and distance and helps engineers fine-tune iron spin and feel. The mantle also creates a firm layer for the cover to compress against to create short-game spin on shots hit with a more glancing blow.

And finally, the cover. This layer is made from either Surlyn or ionomer for most value golf balls, or a softer urethane for premium golf balls, to allow for exacting short-game control and stopping power.

So … never assume all balls are built the same. The right combo can take your game to new heights.

4 golf-ball buying questions and answers from experts

Q: Why does a golf ball with a urethane cover generate so much more short-game spin than a Surlyn-covered ball?

A: Urethane — which TaylorMade uses in its tour-ready TP5 lineup of golf balls — is simply softer than most other cover materials. The softer urethane material creates more groove interaction at impact than what you’d typically get from a firmer ionomer cover. More groove interaction, more spin. Even on glancing blows the urethane material will “stick” in the grooves better to create more spin. —Michael Fox, senior director of product creation, golf balls, TaylorMade

Titleist Pro V1x Left Dash Golf Balls

$54.99
Pro V1x Left Dash golf balls are designed for players seeking a high flight similar to Pro V1x with dramatically lower full swing spin and firmer feel. PLAYER BENEFITS Pro V1x Left Dash was originally developed for the PGA Tour as a Titleist Customized Performance Option in 2018. This model delivers a different combination of performance characteristics than Pro V1 and Pro V1x and allows players to finetune their Flight, Feel and Spin. Given positive player feedback, we are now making Pro V1x Left Dash available to golfers via special order.  Extraordinary distance with consistent flight Lower full swing spin than Pro V1x Slightly lower flight than Pro V1x Firmer feel than Pro V1x Drop-and-Stop short game control

Q: Can the visual technology used on a lot of the new ball models help me shoot lower scores?

A: We’ve seen players produce a more accurate face angle at address and impact by using Srixon’s Divide visual technology. Being able to watch the ball roll true on your intended line gives immediate feedback on your stroke. Confidence and comfort translates to performance gains, so if using visual technology helps you psychologically, it’s going to help your score. As far as ball speed, spin and launch on full-swing shots, visual technology won’t alter performance. —Jeff Brunski, VP of R&D, Cleveland/Srixon

Q: Do more dimples mean it’s a more premium ball?

A: No. The number of dimples doesn’t say much. It’s like only knowing a car’s horsepower; the engine is just one element that contributes to performance. At Titleist, each dimple pattern is designed specifically for each ball’s construction to achieve a specific goal. Sometimes that means a high dimple count (like with the Pro V1 and its 388 dimples) or a lower one (the Pro V1x has but 348). The number is simply a product of the pattern itself, which can include different sized dimples, surface coverage, underlying geometry and various depths. How they mesh is what determines performance. —Mike Madson, VP, golf ball R&D, Titleist

Q: What’s the best way to conduct personal ball testing?

A: Unless you’re dead set on playing the longest two-piece ball in the marketplace, I’d suggest selecting several multilayer balls that speak to you and make time for the short-game area at your local course. Pros always prioritize short-game performance, so hit some greenside shots and see how each ball reacts. Roll putts to get a sense of sound and feel. From there, target a semi-windy day and take the two best options out on the course for head-to-head testing to gauge their bona fides. One will definitely grab your attention. —Jonathan Wall, managing editor (equipment), GOLF.com

We recently published our ultimate 2024 Golf Ball Guide, in which we reviewed and recommended 48 different golf balls for your game. You can check that out here, but scroll below for three quick tips when it comes to understanding the right option for you.

Know the make

We repeat: A golf ball is the only piece of equipment you use on every shot, so it’s important to find one that suits your playing style and your visual preferences and personal feedback goals. Whether you’re looking for a premium ball to deliver high performance on every shot, short and long, or looking to stretch your buying dollars as far as they can go while still finding a ball that feels soft on short-game shots, this guide can help you narrow down your selections so you can find your next favorite ball. We repeat again: Just a little digging into the ball market is one of the cheapest ways to elevate your game.

Know the class

Not all golf balls are alike. In fact, the majority are unique entities designed to fit specific subsets of players and swings. They do, however, fall neatly into four primary performance categories.

PREMIUM: Top-line materials for distance and max short-game performance

PREMIUM VALUE: High-end materials and tech at a lower price

DISTANCE VALUE: For golfers who crave more length off the tee

SOFT SPIN VALUE: Much softer feel and more short-game zip

Make your selection

Once you’ve narrowed down your ideal golf ball selections based on brand, performance and price, it’s time to go shopping. The great thing about golf balls is that testing multiple options won’t bust your wallet and gives you the opportunity to test them in the most important setting of all — the course! So, no matter the final decision, finding a golf ball that fits your game will help improve your consistency and hopefully your scores too.

There’s a good chance you’ve heard it before, but it still bears repeating: The golf ball is the only piece of equipment in your bag — save for your grips — that sees action on every shot you take. Think about that for a second.

In a world where golfers are spending more time (and money) than ever before on clubfittings to optimize their setup, the golf ball remains the forgotten piece of the gear puzzle — an all-important aspect that some leave up to chance.

If you’re a high-spin golfer blindly playing a ball designed to induce more rpm, you’re likely sacrificing distance and consistency on the course. It’s akin to grabbing a suit off the rack and expecting it to fit like a well-tailored Cesare Attolini.

It’s time to change how you look at the golf ball. With a myriad of models, colors and visual tech options available, we can guarantee there’s a ball for your game. Continued improvements in technology and materials have made it easier than ever to decouple launch and spin and find a winning offering that truly does it all from tee to green.

With the help of our 2024 Golf Ball Guide, our goal is to make you smarter and better informed about the options in the marketplace as well as the materials used to bring these high-tech offerings to life. As you’ll quickly notice, a lot goes into crafting the materials and models offered by leading equipment manufacturers. We also give leading gear experts in the industry the opportunity to answer some of your most pressing golf ball questions. Consider this your guide to the ultimate golf ball.

But first, here are 48 of the best new golf balls available for purchase and the essential info you need to know about each model, including how they’re categorized:

Premium: These golf balls use top-of-the-line materials to offer distance and maximum short game control.
Premium value: The golf balls offer high-end materials and technology but at a lower price point.
Distance value: These are golf balls designed to deliver maximum distance and reduced shot dispersion off the tee.
Soft spin value: Golf balls are designed to offer a soft feel and more short game zip than distance focused golf balls.

With an AXIALFLOW dimple that creates a high launch from the driver (compared to other tour-type balls) and a flatter flight from the short irons (compared to other tour-type balls). AXIALFLOW DIMPLE On full shots, the new dimple generates a higher driver flight and flatter wedge flight, when compared to other tour-level balls. JUST 272 DIMPLES FOR A MORE DEFINED LOOK A larger, more defined dimple creates a more precise outline and visual effect preferred by the majority of our testers. SENSATIONALLY SOFT FEEL IS NOT EVERYTHING A soft feel is always expected from Mizuno – but the new RB Tour cover was tested for over three years to ensure its durability is equally satisfying. OUR MOST EXHAUSTIVELY TESTED BALLS EVER Mizuno set 2 R&D teams the task of working in parallel for over three years to identify the ideal balance of construction, compression, dimple configuration and cover.

The RB Tour X is designed to offer a soft feel at impact, along with a lower spinning ballflight off the driver. When paired with the AXIALFLOW dimple pattern, it helps create a high yet penetrating flight for better control through the bag and greater trajectory control into the scoring clubs.

$47.99
To push the limits of your game, you need a ball with all the right ingredients. That’s why the entire Z-STAR Series was designed to deliver tour-level distance, control and feel, from tee to green. Starring a reformulated FastLayer DG Core and improved Spin Skin+ coating, you, too, can experience the formula trusted by Major Champions when wins are on the line. FASTLAYER DG CORE The trade-off is age-old: hard cores are fast, soft cores are slow. But the firmer a golf ball, the harsher it feels at impact, which can reduce your confidence when the pressure is on. That’s why our new FastLayer DG Cores are soft at the center and get firmer from the inside out. The contrasting compression helps them rebound quicker off the face for incredible distance while still providing exceptional feel. NEW SPIN SKIN+ COATING This micronic layer of specialized urethane increases the cover’s degree of friction for even more spin and control. THIN, PREMIUM COVER Every Z-STAR Series golf ball features an extra thin, thermoplastic urethane cover to provide tour-level stopping power around the greens. SEE YOUR SPIN When it comes to pitches and chips around the green, DIVIDE’s unique two-tone cover produces a strobe effect while spinning, revealing the speed and direction of spin on each of your shots. It’s a powerful tool for tracking and improving your consistency, and you can only see it with the Q-STAR TOUR DIVIDE. MORE THAN GOOD LOOKS The new Q-STAR TOUR DIVIDE is a performer, through and through. Unlike painted golf balls, DIVIDE’s entire thermoplastic urethane cover is infused with bright pigments, so the color won’t scratch or tear. Plus, that premium urethane adds spin for plenty of control around the greens. A resilient midlayer increases speed off the tee. The 3-wood remains one of the most important clubs in the bag for a weekend golfer. Even if you’re one of the lucky souls with a semi-reliable driver, it’s imperative to have a strong secondary option off the tee that also provides consistency from the fairway.

The second-longest club in the bag for most golfers — in some cases, it could be the longest — the 3-wood can truly do it all, provided you’re using one built to accentuate your strengths. Think of it as the Swiss Army knife in your bag.

As GOLF’s Fully Equipped co-hosts found out recently, there’s a plethora of worthy 3-woods in the marketplace. But which ones stood out? Here’s a look at several standouts during robotic testing with Golf Laboratories’ swing robot.

TaylorMade Qi10

taylormade qi10 fairway wood
TaylorMade’s Qi10 fairway wood falls in between the Qi10 Tour and Qi10 Max. Jonathan Wall/GOLF

Kris McCormack (True Spec VP of Tour and Education): From what I’m seeing in the [hitting bay], for a majority of people out there, the TaylorMade Qi10 core head has been really solid in the fairway wood category. That’s going anywhere between a Tour player and some of the amateur and collegiate players. Even the higher-handicap players I work with come in and Qi10 has been successful for them.

TaylorMade Qi10 Custom Fairway Wood

$349.99
Introducing the Qi10 fairways. Experience TaylorMade speed with Qi10 forgiveness…off the tee and off the deck. TOUR PROVEN PERFORMANCE The model most popular with both Tour players and amateurs, the Qi10 Fairway is the ideal blend of distance and forgiveness, while the precision CG location delivers a combo of high launch and low spin. NEW INFINITY CARBON CROWN An Infinity Crown provides a clean, uninterrupted view at address while also optimizing performance. Engineers relied on this new design to reshape the club, shifting more weight lower in the clubhead to maintain high inertia with an enlarged face profile to inspire confidence and generate ball speed.

An adjustable 50-gram weight is situated in the back of the head to alter launch and spin. Jonathan Wall/GOLF
inside cobra darkspeed LS fairway 2024
A look inside Cobra’s Darkspeed LS fairway wood. Ryan Barath/GOLF

Ryan Barath (GOLF’s senior equipment editor): I really like the Cobra Darkspeed LS. It has a smaller shape, really hot. My misses correlate with what the data shows. It explains why that 3-wood lines up so well for my game.

The other would be the TaylorMade Qi10 Tour. They took the Stealth 2 Plus, which was a really good product, and they said: What are the ways we can create a better option here? They shallowed the weight port and adjusted the head shape. As the data shows, it’s a little rocket. So you can build this rocket, but you still have 2 degrees of adjustability, so you can make yourself a strong 2-wood or a little 4-wood. It gives you that option that’s very unique.

Mizuno STG 2024 fairway wood
Mizuno’s ST-G Titanium fairway wood. Ryan Barath/GOLF

Gene Parente (Golf Laboratories founder): From a pure data standpoint, it was the PXG 0311 Black Ops if you want a solid 3-wood that’s going to hit it straight and not penalize you on misses. The 1A would be the Mizuno ST-G. It was at the top of the class as far as equal weighting and performance characteristics. But those were the two that jumped out to me in an overall category.

Ping G430 LST and Mizuno ST-G

PING G430 LST 3-wood held in hand on a golf course
Ping’s G430 LST fairway wood. Ryan Barath/GOLF

Jonathan Wall (GOLF’s managing equipment editor): I’ll go with the Ping G430 LST. It was high launch, low spin for golfers who struggle with the longer length of a driver. The length can make it difficult to square up the face, so going to the shorter length of a 3-wood with those launch and spin characteristics makes it a great secondary option off the tee.

The other would be the Mizuno ST-G. I think they absolutely nailed this one. It was second in ball speed and right there in terms of carry consistency [across the entire face].

Ping G430 LST Custom Fairway Wood

$549.99
The low-spinning tour-style design combines a 2041 Beta-Ti face, Ti 8-1-1 body, and a high-density tungsten sole plate to position the CG low/back for faster ball speed with reduced spin to generate big distance gains. The high-strength titanium face wraps into the crown and sole to increase flexing for more ball speed. Its variable roll radius face (Spinsistency) improves performance across the face, especially on thin shots, and the Carbonfly Wrap crown helps lower the CG to increase ball speed and elevate forgiveness with a pleasing sound. Available in 3W only (15°). CARBONFLY WRAP The lightweight composite crown wraps into the heel and toe sections of the skirt, creating weight savings of 10 grams which are reallocated to achieve the lower the CG and increase ball speed. The composite also plays a role in the pleasing sound. FACE WRAP TECHNOLOGY FaceWrap Technology, a variable-thickness, high-strength maraging steel face wraps into the sole and crown of the stainless steel head, generating more flexing for faster ball speed and higher launch for greater distance. SPINSISTENCY The variable roll radius of Spinsistency improves performance across the face (especially on thin shots) by reducing spin to increase ball speed from the maraging steel face. TUNGSTEN BACK WEIGHT A tungsten back weight extends the perimeter weighting to ensure maximum forgiveness. TRAJECTORY TUNING 2.0 Trajectory Tuning 2.0 provides eight hosel positions, adjusting for loft (+/- .5°) and lie (up to 3° flatter than std).

BEST NEW PUTTERS OF 2024

Cleveland HB Soft 2 Putters

Cleveland HB Soft 2 #11 putter

Cleveland HB Soft 2 Putters

$149.99
Get yourself a new Cleveland HB Soft 2 putter from Fairway Jockey today!

NEED TO KNOW: The HB Soft 2 putters feature the latest iteration of Cleveland’s SOFT face, which takes a more granular approach by creating a distinct milling pattern that matches up with each head shape, center of gravity and weighting profile for all nine models.

Particular attention was also paid to different stroke types by designating an appropriate hosel, shaft and grip for both face-balanced and moderate toe hang models to ensure they match up with the golfer.

Many of the shapes are carryovers from the previous lineup, with a few exceptions. The most notable is the HB Soft 2 Retreve, a new mallet shape with a hole positioned in the middle that makes it possible to pick the ball out of the hole or off any surface without having to bend over and grab it.

Dunlop Never Compromise Reserve Putters

Dunlop Never Compromise Reserve #1 putter

Dunlop Never Compromise Reserve Putters

$449.99
Get yourself a new Dunlop Never Compromise Reserve putter from Fairway Jockey today!

NEED TO KNOW: The all-new Never Compromise Reserve putter experience is designed around a unique in-store length fitting process, with each fitting starting with an assessment of a golfer’s posture and setup over the ball. From there the fitter can discern the proper length for the putter — down to 1/4″ precision. Once the proper length is selected, golfers can then go through the process of selecting their preferred head shape based on alignment, stroke type, and finish. After that, the fitter can help the golfer dial in the ideal grip option and head weight with the help of the adjustable sole weights, and then it’s off to the course.

The Never Compromise Reserve line of putters are 100 percent CNC milled from soft 303 stainless steel and individually adjusted for weight during the fitting process. The goal of these features is to help golfers find the ideal balance based on the putter’s length.

The Never Compromise reserve line features five stroke-specific models to choose from with three options designed with more toe hang shapes for lighter arcing strokes, plus two face-balanced shapes for more limited arc putting styles.

Odyssey Ai-One and Ai-One Milled Putters

Odyssey Ai-One #7 putter

Odyssey Ai-One Putters

$299.99-449.99
Get yourself new Odyssey Ai-One putter from Fairway Jockey today!

NEED TO KNOW: With a speed control problem to solve, Odyssey leveraged Callaway’s Artificial Intelligence design and super-computing capabilities to come up with a speed solution: the Ai-One insert.

The end result is two different inserts — Ai-One and Ai-One Milled. The former is a co-molded insert featuring a grooved urethane layer and aluminum backer that’s designed to produce a traditional White Hot feel. The milled offering, on the other hand, is made from titanium — and paired with a milled stainless steel head — to deliver a premium feel at impact.

Instead of showing tech images of the AI-inspired contours on the back of the insert, Odyssey decided to make its latest creation visible to pros and amateurs alike. The window is made from an automotive-grade polymer called “Panlite” that makes it possible to showcase the contours, while still maintaining a premium look. It’s important to note the window will only be available on the Ai-One; the Ai-One Milled has a more traditional cavity with the Odyssey logo affixed in the middle.

Odyssey Ai-One Cruiser Putters

Odyssey Ai-One Cruiser Double Wide CH putter

Odyssey Ai-One Cruiser Putters

$349.99
Get yourself new Odyssey Ai-One Cruiser putter from Fairway Jockey today!

NEED TO KNOW: The Odyssey Ai-One Cruiser line is built on the now-familiar AI-One platform, but with head weights and shapes designed to offer extra stability and, in some cases, slightly larger head sizes.

The line offers three putter configurations to help fit three different putting stroke types: Cruiser, for players looking for a counter-balanced style; Armlock, for those that putt with an arm-locking forward press; and Broomstick, for those that use a long-putter style.

The most important technology is the Ai-One insert, which is designed with the help of Ai to create various thicknesses to help normalize ball speeds on mishits. Although the insert is made from aluminum, it is co-molded with urethane to create a soft feel preferred by those who are familiar with the classic Odyssey White Hot insert.

Ping PLD Milled Putters

Piing PLD Milled Anser putter

Ping PLD Milled Putters

$449.99
Get yourself new Ping PLD Milled putter from Fairway Jockey today!

NEED TO KNOW: The models in the 2024 PLD launch are the Anser, Anser 2D, Oslo 3, DS72, and Ally Blue 4 — all of which will be available at Ping retailers. On top of the new stock configurations, Ping’s online putter customizer tool gives golfers even more options to make their PLD Milled putter truly unique.

Other than the new Ally Blue 4, which is constructed with multiple materials, all of the new PLD Milled models are fully CNC machined from forged 303 stainless steel and treated with a gunmetal finish. They also feature Ping’s deep AMP (aggressive milling pattern) to provide a soft yet solid feel at impact and better control over speed and distance.

To get an idea of the precision that goes into each putter, more than four hours of milling time is required to make each head. The Ally Blue 4 is a fully machined, three-piece design differentiated by its square footprint and full-length top alignment aid. The strong-arc design consists of an aluminum body, stainless steel soleplate, and aluminum hosel to create an extremely high-MOI, easy-to-align mallet.

Scotty Cameron 2024 Phantom Putters

Scotty Cameron 2024 Phantom putter

Scotty Cameron 2024 Phantom Putters

$449.99
Get yourself a new Scotty Cameron 2024 Phantom putter today!

NEED TO KNOW: Gearheads who are familiar with the dual-milled face technology found on last year’s Scotty Cameron Super Select line will notice the new milling process made the cut for Phantom. While the milling marks may have the appearance of something that leans towards the deep side, the putter’s feel falls right in the middle between shallow and deep.

The face itself (along with the body) is crafted from 303 stainless steel and combined with a lightweight 6061 aircraft aluminum sole plate and flange. A newly optimized vibration-dampening technology ensures that aluminum provides valuable weight savings without negatively affecting sound and performance.

With four head shapes (Phantom 5, 7, 9 and 11) in the lineup, Cameron spent extra time working on the alignment systems for each putter to ensure it was easy to align the head at address. For example, the angles on the heel and toe of Phantom 5 point toward the target and complement the milled sight dots (found on the 5 and 7 models) to create a clean path to the target.

TaylorMade Spider Tour Putters

TaylorMade Spider Tour putter

TaylorMade Spider Tour Putters

$349.99
Get yourself a new TaylorMade Spider Tour putter from Fairway Jockey today!

NEED TO KNOW: With TaylorMade’s True Path alignment system featured prominently on all five Spider Tour heads, designers set out to create distinctive shapes and weight setups for all swing types. Models include the Spider Tour, Spider Tour X, Spider Tour Z, Spider Tour V and Spider Tour S.

Take a peek at the face and you’ll find something familiar — with a twist. The molded Pure Roll insert, made from a combination of Surlyn and Aluminum, has been a staple since it was first introduced on the original Spider X. Situated directly behind the molded Surlyn is a piece of Hybrar that was most recently used on the Stealth and Stealth HD irons to dampen vibrations at impact.

The lightweight steel wireframe construction allowed engineers to open up the playbook and move the TSS (TaylorMade Swingweight System) weights around to dial in the center of gravity location for each head and putting style. For example, the weights are situated in the back wings on Spider Tour to increase stability; with Spider X, the weight was positioned further forward — just behind the face — for more face rotation.

BEST NEW WEDGES OF 2024

Callaway CB Wedges

Callaway CB wedge

Callaway CB Wedge

$159.99
Get yourself new Callaway CB wedge with custom shafts and specs from Fairway Jockey today!

NEED TO KNOW: Everyone could use a little extra forgiveness, and for golfers that really need it in their short game, Callaway has updated and improved on their CB (cavity back) wedge design to offer more feel, more spin, more control and more versatility.

The new Callaway CB wedge doesn’t hide who it is — a cavity back wedge built to deliver performance to golfers that are already playing cavity back irons and want to continue with that design into their highest lofted wedges. But unlike some other cavity back design wedges on the market, the engineers at Callaway wanted to give these golfers the versatility to hit different shots, so a more cambered sole with heel and toe relief along with a pre-worn leading edge is built into the wider sole design.

Cleveland CBX 4 ZipCore Wedge

Cleveland CBX 4 ZipCore wedge

Cleveland CBX 4 ZipCore Wedge

$169.99
Get yourself a new Cleveland CBX 4 ZipCore wedge with custom shafts and specs from Fairway Jockey today!

NEED TO KNOW: Cleveland’s latest CBX 4 ZipCore wedge (available Jan. 24) is a reminder that options exist in the wedge space for golfers who don’t consistently find the center of the face from inside 130 yards. Blade offerings, such as RTX ZipCore, remain a strong offering for those who know how to wield a wedge.

The cavity-back design of CBX 4 is perimeter-weighted with mass positioned along the outer boundary to mitigate distance loss on mishits. Utilizing the same ZipCore technology found on RTX, Cleveland’s wedge team was able to replace heavy steel in the hosel and heel section of the head with a lightweight, vibration-dampening material that netted significant discretionary mass.

Depending on the loft, Cleveland added a highly specialized HydraZip face technology to improve wet and dry performance. On the groove front, CBX 4 employs Cleveland’s UltiZip face technology — a sequence of sharp, deep and tight grooves designed to ramp up spin control and consistency in a meaningful way.

Cleveland RTX Full-Face 2 wedge
Cleveland Smart Sole Full-Face wedge

Cleveland RTX Full-Face 2 Wedge

$179.99
Get yourself a new Cleveland RTX Full-Face 2 wedge with custom shafts and specs from Fairway Jockey today!

NEED TO KNOW: The newest addition to the Cleveland family of wedges is RTX Full-Face 2, a line of wedges designed to offer premium control, and extra confidence by extending the grooves to the toe of the wedge and covering the entire face.

The new RTX Full-Face 2 wedges feature ZipCore which replaces heavy steel from inside the head with a low-density core to remove unnecessary weight from the hosel and the heel area and helps to also deliver a higher MOI for greater forgiveness.

Each wedge in the Smart Sole Full-Face line is specifically designed for the most common shots a golfer is going to face during a round of golf and the extra-wide, three-tiered sole helps to prevent chucked shots and smooth turf interaction from anywhere on the course.

Mizuno T24 Wedges

Mizuno T24 wedge

Mizuno T24 Wedge

$179.99
Get yourself a new Mizuno T24 wedge with custom shaft and specs from Fairway Jockey today!

NEED TO KNOW: The Mizuno T24 features a more compact wedge profile that was created by reducing the width of the top line and shortening the blade length. This shorter blade length freed up more mass to be positioned higher in the head to help control spin and trajectory.

With the trend of more players replacing their pitching wedges with specialty wedges that flow into their gap, sand and lob wedges, the T24s offer a progressive leading edge and hosel transition to help frame the ball.

In addition, the T24 grooves have a new more conical shape around the radius to increase sharpness to go along with Mizuno’s continued use of the hydro flow micro-grooves to help channel moisture away faster for better spin.

Ping S159 Wedges

Ping S159 wedge

Ping S159 Wedge

$179.99
Get yourself new Ping S159 wedges with custom shafts and specs from Fairway Jockey today!

NEED TO KNOW: Inspired with input from Ping’s stable of Tour players, each S159 head is cast from 8620 carbon steel and features a straighter leading edge to fit modern players’ preferences. The head also helps with alignment on full shots.

The key to the S159’s spin performance is a set of wheel-cut precision-milled grooves that transition through the lofts to maximize control. The 54- to 62-degree lofts have more tightly spaced MicroMax grooves, while the 46- to 52-degree lofts are engineered for greater control on full swing shots at higher speeds.

To help you find the right S159 wedges for your game, Ping also is launching a WebFit Wedge app to give golfers a quick and easy way to help find the wedges for their needs.

TaylorMade MG4 Wedges

TaylorMade MG4 wedge

TaylorMade MG4 Wedge

$179.99
Get yourself a new TaylorMade MG4 wedge with custom shafts and specs from Fairway Jockey today!

NEED TO KNOW: There’s no questioning where TaylorMade’s MG4 falls on the feel spectrum — it’s designed to be soft. And with a solid-construction wedge, the only way to change feel is to alter what’s behind the ball.

To add consistent spin to MG4, TaylorMade went through 12 iterations before landing on its Spin Tread technology. A raw face and strategically designed grooves are paired with a new laser etching treatment that can be felt by simply running your finger along the face.

Subtle improvements were made to the profiling of the 56- and 60-degree wedges, but the lower lofts continue to look almost identical to MG3. Through Tour feedback, TaylorMade increased the leading edge radius down in the “belly” for face manipulation purposes. A straighter leading edge was also added to allow it to “lay better into the ground.”

Titleist Vokey SM10 Wedges

Titleist Vokey SM10 wedge

Titleist Vokey SM10 Wedge

$189.99
Get yourself new Titleist Vokey SM10 wedges with custom shafts and specs from Fairway Jockey today!

NEED TO KNOW: Tour feedback continues to drive Vokey’s product creation, and one of the more subtle improvements in the SM10s is a minor shift in center of gravity (.5mm) on the 46- through 52-degree wedges to remove a draw bias that some pros noticed on the lower lofts.

Vokey continues to put a high value on spin with a TX9 groove that’s individually cut based on loft and finish. The Spin Milled cutting process, introduced last year with SM9, tightens tolerances by using a cutter to create the entire scoreline instead of a partial scoreline.

A wide variety of custom options will also be available through Vokey’s WedgeWorks program, which makes it possible to choose from six toe engravings, WedgeWorks Flight Lines, stamping options (10-character Straight/Freestyle stamping; 15 characters around the toe, and two lines of 10 characters each) and custom paint fill.

Callaway Paradym Ai Smoke HL hybrid

Callaway Paradym Ai Smoke Hybrids

$319.99
Get yourself new Callaway Paradym Ai Smoke hybrids with custom shafts and specs from Fairway Jockey today!

MODELS: Callaway Paradym Ai Smoke, Callaway Paradym Ai Smoke Max Fast and Callaway Paradym Ai Smoke HL

NEED TO KNOW: With a slightly larger profile than last year’s Paradym, the Ai Smart Face architecture on the standard Paradym Ai Smoke is designed to benefit moderate to higher swing speeds. To keep launch and spin on the lower side, a tungsten speed cartridge is situated in the sole — towards the face — to drive the center of gravity forward.

While the adjustable Ai Smoke HL hybrid also features a tungsten cartridge in the sole, the lower face profile makes it easier to get the ball airborne with more spin. With AI continuing to shape the face designs, it’s important to note that the HL hybrids are designed to pair with the HL irons. The Ai Smoke Max Fast has a lower, flatter profile for those who fall on the slower end of the speed spectrum. To maintain a lighter overall weight than the standard and HL hybrids, the adjustable hosel was replaced with a bonded, non-adjustable version.

MODELS: Cleveland Halo XL and Cleveland Halo XL Hy-Wood

NEED TO KNOW: A key attribute of the Halo XL woods line is the Glide Rails on the sole of the clubs to help lower the center of gravity by positioning extra mass on the sole and to help deliver more effective turf interaction to better maintain a square face through the impact zone. In essence, they act as rudders to help the club glide through the grass without digging and are especially effective from the rough.

On the inside, the Halo XL woods utilize the same AI-designed MainFrame XL technology as the Launcher XL2 drivers to expand the effective size of the sweet spot to boost distance and forgiveness, but with evolving variable face thickness through the entire Halo XL series woods to best match how each club is most often missed based on player testing data.

MODELS: Mizuno ST-Max 230

NEED TO KNOW: The max forgiveness and geometry of the driver continue with the new ST-Max 230 hybrids by offering a larger footprint to help add MOI and stability around the entire head. Both the fairway woods and hybrids utilize a high-strength MAS1C steel face for ball speed that matches up with the larger Cortech chamber on the sole. A composite-wrap crown covers the toe section of the fairway wood heads to reduce overall mass higher in the head.

The new hybrids also use a waffle pattern on the inside of the steel crown to increase strength and help position more weight in the sole, increasing launch and creating a more stable ball flight. The ST-Max hybrids will be available in lofts of 19, 22, 25 and 28 degrees for right-handers, with the 22- and 25-degree heads also available for left-handed golfers. NEED TO KNOW: When it comes to the Black Ops fairway woods and hybrids, the story remains much the same as the drivers thanks to a new proprietary high-strength steel face material that allows for a 12.5 percent thinner face construction to help boost ball speeds, increase launch, lower spin and save precious grams to help increase forgiveness.

PXG engineers got creative with the Black Ops hybrid design since hybrids have to fit such a wide variety of golfers and the Black Ops goes from a 17-degree 2-iron replacement down to a 31-degree. The profile shifts through the lofts to help blend through the bag and can be custom-built to fit any player.

MODELS: TaylorMade Qi10, TaylorMade Qi10 Max and TaylorMade Qi10 Tour

NEED TO KNOW: Just like the Qi10 drivers, the Qi10 hybrids have been refined and tuned to better fit the intended player for each model. The standard model remains, but there has also been a change in vocabulary. The plus or + model is now called the Qi10 Tour, and the HD is now called the Qi10 Max.

Although the new Qi10 hybrids don’t have a full infinity crown like the fairway woods, the new crown design covers more surface area to save weight and boost forgiveness. The Qi10 Tour hybrid is the only hybrid in the line that offers up adjustability in the form of the (4-degree) loft sleeve, and like the tour fairway wood, the Qi10 hybrid offers a more boring and lower spinning ball flight to help faster players control the ball in all conditions.

MODELS: XXIO 13

NEED TO KNOW: When it comes to XXIO’s new 13 lineup, the goal is quite simple: Create a set of game-changing tools that add speed and consistency for someone who swings under 90 miles per hour. As one of the leaders in the lightweight club space, XXIO has become a go-to option thanks, in large part, to specialized technologies designed solely for the set.

The XXIO 13 fairways and hybrids offer a similar BiFlex face design to the new drivers and new cannon sole design that places mass lower in the head for a deeper center of gravity. An elevated weight pad located behind the face creates space for a thin sole portion to optimize ball speeds for shots hit low on the face, a common mishit location for many golfers. Similar to the driver, the goal behind the technologies is to increase the overall sweet spot while inducing a higher launch angle at the same time.

For the 2024 edition of GOLF’s ClubTest, we once again teamed up with Golf Laboratories for robotic driver testing. With the help of their swing robot, we’re able to get a better picture of how each driver performs at the same speed (95 mph), delivery and attack angle in a 9-point face mapping test. The end result is an unbiased (and extremely detailed) look at where each driver model excels.

We continue with robotic insights on PXG’s all-new Black Ops drivers. Pick up all your PXG gear at Fairway Jockey.

Cheat code

Testing every model in all available lofts makes it possible to see if specific combinations are a better fit when the robot is swinging at 95 mph. In this instance, the 10.5-degree Black Ops stood out from the pack in several key areas.

Let’s start with the most important attribute: high-toe misses. Under Golf Laboratories’ testing parameters, the 10.5-degree head lost 0.3 yards on high-toe impact — one of the tightest mishit carry distance deltas (to geometric center strikes) we saw on the swing robot.

On the flip side, the 9-degree head saw the carry delta jump above 10 yards at the same 95 mph swing speed. The numbers reinforce the importance of getting fit for your driver to optimize launch, spin and mishit protection.

AMF Face Technology PXG 0311 Black Ops Drivers deliver big distance gains using a propriety high strength, and more flexible, Titanium Alloy face material thatsupports increased face deflection during impact. High Strength Composite Contruction Lightweight crown and sole inserts, made from high-grade carbon fiber using advanced compression molding, enable optimal weight distribution in the clubhead. This enhances the moment of inertia (MOI), shifts the center of gravity (CG) lower and farther back, resulting in improved distance and forgiveness. Non-Uniform Buldge and Roll Face The face design supports enhanced forgiveness and improves overall performance by optimizing the club’s reaction to off-center hits.

In addition to earning high marks for high-toe misses, the 10.5-degree head gained 0.6 yards on high-center misses. It’s worth pointing out that several drivers we tested saw distance increases on mishits, with Black Ops being one of them, so this isn’t an anomaly. (The 10.5-degree head had a 5-yard distance delta on toe strikes across all three locations, so it’s a great option to test if you live in that area of the face.)

Before a few years ago, mishits penalized golfers with suboptimal launch, spin and carry numbers. Now we’re seeing several models produce better performance characteristics on common misses. Welcome to the new frontier of driver design.

Low spin bombs

Reducing spin is one way to increase distance without making wholesale swing changes. In most cases, turning down the loft sleeve with a wrench can get you there. Or you can track down a driver with built-in low spin characteristics.

If you’re just starting the search for a low-spin driver, PXG’s Black Ops and Black Ops Tour deserve testing consideration after they produced some of the lowest launch and spin numbers we saw on the swing robot.

PXG black ops 2024 exploded
An exploded view of the Black Ops driver components. PXG

The 10.5-degree heads alone produced an average spin rate of 2,500 RPMs with a 10-degree launch angle, which was anywhere from 300-500 RPMs and 1-1.5 degrees lower launching and spinning than other brands.

The 8- and 9-degree heads registered even lower launch and spin numbers at 8.8 degrees and 2,000 RPMs. Those numbers are perfect if you hit it out of the middle consistently, but a high toe is going to knuckle in a big way if you’re already sitting at 2,000 RPMs. It’s food for thought during the driver testing process.

Small circle

Black Ops and Black Ops Tour both finished inside the top 5 in dispersion, meaning you can play the standard or low-spin head and see consistent numbers across the entire face.

The Black Ops produced a dispersion of 7 yards, while the Black Ops Tour came in at 9.8 yards. It’s further confirmation that the switch from T-412 Titanium to a new Advanced Material Face (AMF) is already paying off in a big way.

With PXG bumping the price of its latest driver line to $600, many golfers have wondered aloud if the technology is worth the increase. Based on the dispersion numbers alone, it’s clear PXG has things trending in the right direction with Black Ops.
